Why Sign Dates Shift From Year to Year

Every printed table gives Libra as roughly 23 September to 22 October. Every table is also slightly wrong for some years, and if your birthday sits within a day of either end, the table is not able to answer your question at all.

The reason has nothing to do with astrology being vague. It is a calendar problem, and it is the same one that gives us leap years.

The year does not divide evenly

A tropical year — one complete circuit of the Sun as measured from equinox to equinox — is about 365.2422 days. Our calendar year is 365 days, with a leap day inserted every four years to absorb the difference.

That correction works over the long run but it does not hold anything steady within a four-year cycle. The Sun’s actual position on a given calendar date drifts by up to about a day across that cycle, then snaps back when February gains a day.

Sign boundaries are defined by the Sun’s position, not by the calendar. So the moment the Sun crosses from Virgo into Libra lands at a different clock time each year, and occasionally on a different calendar date.

What this means in practice

For most birthdays it means nothing whatsoever. If you were born on 5 October you are a Libra in every year that has ever existed, and no amount of drift will move a boundary two and a half weeks.

For birthdays within roughly a day of a boundary, it decides the answer. Somebody born on 22 October might be Libra or Scorpio depending on the year and, in the closest cases, the hour. A table that prints “22 October” as the last day of Libra is stating a common case, not a rule.

The cusp is not a blend

A persistent piece of folklore holds that being born near a boundary makes somebody a mixture of two signs — a “Libra-Scorpio cusp” with traits from both.

The tradition does not support this, and the geometry does not either. The Sun occupies one position. That position falls in one sign. There is no intermediate zone where it sits in two at once; the boundary is a line, not a band.

What is genuinely true is that the other bodies do not respect the Sun’s boundary. Somebody born at the end of Libra frequently has Mercury or Venus already in Scorpio, because those planets travel close to the Sun and cross slightly before or after it. That produces a chart with real Scorpio content — which feels like a blend and is often reported as one.

The distinction matters because it changes what to do about it. “You are a blend” has no follow-up. “Your Sun is Libra and your Mercury is in Scorpio” is a specific, checkable claim about a chart, and it explains the experience better.

The other boundary problem

Sun sign boundaries drift by about a day. The Moon’s boundaries move roughly thirteen degrees every twenty-four hours, which is a far more aggressive version of the same issue.

That speed means the Moon crosses a sign boundary on roughly one day in twelve, and on those days the birth hour decides the answer. What to do if you are near an edge

If it turns out you are on the far side of a boundary from what you had always assumed, that is worth sitting with rather than dismissing.
